Manu Chao - 'Rainin' in Paradize' (Virgin, 2007)
With all the talk of Gogol Bordello and 2007 being the year of "world music", it was about time that Manu Chao re-emerged from his clouds of smoke.  Politcally charged lyrics reference Congo, Zaire, Jerusalem, Baghdad and Fallujah, while the chorus refers to the Masai tribe of Kenya.  Musically, the song is a nod in the direction of his previous work with Manu Negra - in place of Game Boy sounds comes crashing guitar.  This song is available as a free download from Manu Chao's official website.  Definately one to check out. Welcome back Manu Chao.

Catoan - 'Stranger' (self-release, 2007)
There's a lot to be said for the London music scene.  Hundreds of bands play countless gigs in a number of venues.  The scene is strong and diverse.  However, this thirst for live music also comes at a price.  Many a band are, to be quite frank, poor. Catoan is one of these bands.  Originally hailing from Northern Ireland, the band have decamped to London to try and make it here.  'Stranger' veers into self-important acoustic based balladry and all in all isn't that bad, but isn't that good either.  One is left feeling as if they've heard this song before, albeit in a more innovative and exciting way.  Probably one to avoid, unless you appreciate insipid and dull music.
