GTA IV - The Music
The only game release that is worth mentioning on a music blog is GTA IV...
The new installment in the GTA IV series has received almost universal acclaim from websites and magazines and looks set to become the game to change outdated concepts that video games are a lesser art than, say, film.
But we're only interested in the music. GTA III: San Andreas featured a great early 1990s soundtrack and Axl Rose as a radio DJ. GTA IV takes the celebrity DJs one step further with Iggy Pop, Juliet Lewis and Karl Largerfeld.
"But what of the music itself?" I hear you cry. Well, it's the usual mix of styles on a range of music styles. What is more likely to interest Rockbeatstone readers are the rock stations. There are two: Liberty Rock 97.8 which features classic rock and Iggy Pop as DJ and Radio Broker which features alternative rock and Juliet Lewis. Unlike previous installments, the playlist is randomised and there are multiple introductions to the songs meaning that it will take longer to become stale. Full playlists for these stations are included below. And pretty good they are too.
Other radio stations featured include talk radios, a hardcore punk station, various hip-hop, reggae, Jazz, funk and dance stations, as well as my potential favourite, a radio station called Vladivostok FM which features "Eastern European music"
The radio stations feature over 200 songs and there is an unusual scheme with Amazon.com in place whereby if a song is heard and liked, one can use the in-game mobile phone to "text" a service which will tell you what the song name and artist is. The song selection can then be emailed through the Xbox's or Playstation's online service and downloaded as a DRM free MP3 via Amazon.com. This is a brilliant marketing ploy and a great modern way to purchase music.
As with previous installments an official soundtrack will be made available in due course on CD and for download.
